How Serious is Climate Change?
By Bryan Bjerregaard
Political history of the subject of climate change
I found this article thought it
was very interesting to hear about what scientists think and Bernie Saunders
thinks in the democratic national debate with Bernie Saunders, Hillary Clinton,
and Governor of Maryland. In summary of what happened at this debate is that
Hillary Clinton, and the Governor of Maryland agreed the biggest threat to the
US was ISIS, But Bernie Saunders believes that there is a bigger threat and it
is climate change, and pollution. Bernie Saunders believes that if we do not
listen to the scientists we will have a major threat that will destroy
ourselves without even knowing it. Bernie Saunders also says that if we do not
handle climate change we will struggle to grow crops, make and use healthy
water, and you will also see all kinds of international conflict from other
countries.
Climate
change has been a serious problem sense the mid 1930’s with World War 2
beginning and automobiles being made constantly, and nuclear compounds being
identified, and figuring out how to control nuclear waste that contains a lot
of radiation. Even in the 1800s we started burning fossil fuels which is very
bad for the environment CO2 can absorb the heat from fossil fuels and can cause
very serious issues to plants killing them or stopping the growth of many
plants.
Purpose of this article
I
want the readers to get an understanding on how serious climate change is. The
effects of climate and change and air pollution can be catastrophic cause lung
disease, shut down of major organs, wrinkly skin, skin cancer, shorter life
span. We need to all learn the seriousness of climate change and air pollution
if we do this we can be ready when major dangerous catastrophe’s. Many
scientists greatest fear is climate change because 10,000 years ago an ice age
so powerful killed millions of life forms and was very catastrophic to the
environment raised the water level dramatically it was very powerful.
Evidence for and against climate change
Many studies
published in peer-review scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of
actively climate scientists agree. Many leading scientific organizations
worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position that is a huge
number of scientists believing that climate change is a threat to the world.
Many scientists believe the main cause of climate change is not from the sun
they believe is from human activities emitting greenhouse gases, some of the
few human activities that are causing this is pipelines, canals, fossil fuels,
nuclear waste programs. Big scientific associations who support climate change
as a threat includes, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American
Chemical Society, American Geophysical Union, American Medical Association.
Huge companies like these who specifically research climate change, greenhouse
gas emissions.
Climate change
impacts society in many ways. Climate change can alter rainfall, influence crop
yields, affect human health, cause changes to forests and other ecosystems, and
even impact our energy supply. States Like Utah and Colorado has changed big
these states have warmed three degrees in Fahrenheit in the last century. In
Western United States heat waves are increasing, which means snow is melting
earlier in spring. In the next few decades’ scientists believe that the flow of
water in Western United States will decrease, which means it will increase the
intensity of wildfires in our forests. The productivity in Utah with farms and
ranches will decrease also because of the decrease in water flow. Our Climate
is changing because earth is getting warmer. Greenhouse gases are also changing
the worlds ice cover and ocean level. Carbon Dioxide reacts with water forming
an acid called Carbonic acid, causing the oceans to become more acidic.
The
Human Health is affected greatly from weather if it gets too cold it can stop
our organs, if it gets to hot it can be unhealthy and kill some people also.
High air temperatures can cause heat strokes, quicker dehydration, hot weather
can also cause cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous systems not to function
right and shut down. Rising temperatures can also increase the formation of
ground-level ozone, a huge component of smog. Ozone has lots of effects on
humans, it can aggravate asthma, increase the risk of premature death from
lung, and heart disease. The EPA have been working really hard to reduce our
ground ozone. As the climate change increases the more difficult it is
controlling it.

Conclusion Climate change is the problem I agree fully what Bernie
Saunders says “The number one threat to the United States is Climate Change.”
The effects it has on life is devistating. You see rapid increase of wildfires
all over just from this decade just in 2007 Utah had its most devistating
wildfire in history!! Many of peoples lives and property is getting destroyed.
California is going through one of its biggest droughts in history they have to
find new ways to provide water. People in america are turning there yards into
bark and rocks because grass cant stay alive they need lots of water with the
increase in temperature. We need to figure out climatechange quick because the
hotter it gets the more difficult it is going to control climate change. I
really believe what Bernie Saunders is a fact not fiction.
